Hello!

I am from Scotland and will be travelling to Greece from 14th to 28th June. I am looking to find out if there are any races anywhere in mainland Greece or on any of the islands which I could take part in during my visit? I'm finding it difficult to find any information, as I cannot read Greek.

I can run any distance from 5km up to 50km.

Any help would be greatly received.

Hi Craig,
There’s finally something new in the calendar that you might like to know:
Two races will take place on Saturday June 20th in the area of Ermioni (Peloponese, Argolida region): https://www.google.gr/maps/place/Ermioni+Marine/@37.3866484,23.2466478,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0x8295f7b558869599.
Both races start at 17:30 from sea level:
The first, is a 10km asphalt road race and the second, a 23km “mixed race”: 7km asphalt road + 10km trail race through forest and canyon terrain with a positive altitude gain of 160m (uphill from 40m to 200m) + 6km asphalt road again till finish line.
The entrance fee for both races is 5euros and the registration link is https://results.chronolog.gr/registration.aspx?h=4e4b48ad74f51f49709be740148f113c
Unfortunately their web page is in greek only, but if you’re interested I can give you the mobile number or the e-mail address of one of the organizers so you can contact them directly.
P.S. There is also a 2,5km swim race that takes place there on Sunday June 21st 09:00
P.S.2 If you have an e-mail address, I can also send you the route map as a Word docx file attachment if you like (unfortunately there is no direct link for it, you can only download it in your computer, but given the greek text, I don’t think you could do it by yourself)
P.S.3 You can get to Ermioni by boat from Pireaus in less than 3 hours (you may check itineraries here: www.openseas.gr) and from there you may also get to the islands of Poros, Spetses or/and Hydra in less than 1 hour, even for a day visit.

Hi again Craig,
haven't forgotten you but still nothing that suits you.
Even this race http://www.en.corfuoldtowntrail.com/ in the town of Corfu (Ionian Sea), is just a little bit too early for you.
You'll surely hear from me if something convenient appears on the calendar...

So it looks like the Cyclades is where I'm mostly going to be.

Have so far seen that the Syros Half Marathon has been moved to 14th of June, but I can't make it from Athens in time.

Also Folegandros Chora race doesn't leave enough time to get back to Athens.

I'm hoping something will happen on the weekend between these races (20th/21st June). I will wait and see.

The Tinos race looks good, but unfortunately our flights are already booked so cannot arrive earlier.

The Folegandros race is exactly the sort of thing I am looking for. I think I may have trouble getting from Folegandros back to Athens for my flight on the 28th though.

Hmmmm, i'm afraid you have a point there, given that it's an evening race and that the earliest you can be back to Piraeus on Sunday 28th is at 2p.m. according to the informations available in this link: http://www.openseas.gr/en/index.html
But don't worry, we don't give up yet!

Hi Craig,
Also, you may find it interesting, early in June (6th of June) 5, 10 and 21 km races at the famous island of Tinos.

Hello Craig,
here's two links I found, that may be interesting for you:
1 This one will lead you away from the greek islands, but of course it is up to you to decide: http://www.xterragreece.com/en/
2 This one, is just the opposite of the previous, meaning that it leads you to one of the Cyclades Islands: http://www.runningreece.com/en/events/multi-terrain?view=event&event_id=103
If something else comes up in the following weeks, i'll let you know!

Deorum & sam, thank you for responding.

I don't yet have any exact plans for where I will be (they are flexible, so I can try and be in a particular place for a race). We fly into Athens and will likely take in some islands.

I like both road and trail running.

I will take a look at Olympus Marathon and maybe wait a little longer to see what is added to the race calendar.

...and here is the race calendar (is not completed yet) in case you have missed it

You can use google translate tools to see the pages in english...

Hi Craig,

If you are pretty experienced (especially at mountain trails) on the last day of your trip (so i don't know if you can handle it) there is the most well known mountain marathon of Greece at famous Olympus mountain (http://www.olympus-marathon.com/index.php?newlang=english) where registrations are still open for foreigners...

But as I said before ONLY if you have been trained in that kind of races as its one of the most difficult trail marathons out there (but one of the most beautiful also) where you have to "climb" from sea level to 2600 meters in the first 20kms so its gona be a hard long race (10 hours is the time limit)

June is starting to get pretty hot here,
so race season is not at its peak.

However surely there will races for you to run. Not any major races thought, but smaller local races, but i believe they are good enough.

You prefer road or mountain?

In what area of Greece you will around? Athens?

Its pretty early for the calender to be complete, more races will come up as april ends.
